Delegation from Ethiopia visits Vitens Evides International

06 October 2011

A delegation from water company Harar from Ethiopia recently visited Vitens Evides International. This visit formed part of the course on Good Governance in the Water Sector that the group followed at Unesco-IHE. The delegation attended presentations on the history and management of Vitens, on Finance & Control and on the international activities of Vitens and Evides. The group also visited the Customer division and the Operational Management centre in Utrecht.

Harar is situated in eastern Ethiopia. In 2006, its historical centre was named a world heritage site by UNESCO. Harar is situated in a very dry part of the country along the edge of the region now plagued by famine. Likewise, the water supply of Harar city also faces water shortages. With funds from the African Development Bank, efforts are now being made to address the water supply.

A project leader from Vitens Evides International will pay a return visit to the water company in Ethiopia in November to investigate whether Vitens Evides can contribute towards more effective water resources management and to enhance water use efficiency through the reduction of non-revenue water.
