Second Vitens Evides International mission to Haiti

19 June 2010
Utrecht/Rotterdam – On Saturday 19 June a team from Vitens Evides left for Haiti for the second time. The purpose of the mission is to determine whether Vitens Evides International can contribute to the reconstruction of the drinking water supply. Major investments are needed for the supply of drinking water, not only to build a new infrastructure, but also to re-establish the water company’s organisation and to make it operational. An inventory will be made of the state of affairs at the present time, the priorities as concerns any future partnership, as well as the feasibility and any risks. Where possible the mission will also immediately provide technical support.

The first mission left in the immediate aftermath of the massive earthquake that shook the island on 12 January this year. The team from Vitens Evides International travelled to Port-au-Prince to help determine the amount of damage caused to the drinking water supply and, where possible, to get those parts of the supply that were still operational up and running again. Among other things, local wells were located in the refugee camp at Champs de Mars which could be used to set up a drinking water supply for this camp and the surrounding neighbourhood
