Ghana Water Company Ltd. (GWCL) is responsible for the drinking water supply for eight million people in the urban areas of Ghana. Vitens Evides International and the South African Rand Water Services Pty (RWS) have concluded a five-year management contract with GWCL. Aqua Vitens Rand Water Ltd. (AVRL) - a subsidiary of the joint venture between Vitens Evides International and RWS - acts as the local operator. The project aims at improving the urban water supply system. GWCL must become a financially healthy organisation. Vitens Evides International also works on the reduction of losses due to leaks and reduction in the use of chemicals and electricity.
At the moment AVRL is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the drinking water infrastructure, including 85 treatment works that supply drinking water to 55 areas. There are about 360,000 connections and over 10,000 public standpipes serving six to seven million people. AVRL is also purchasing supplies, chemicals and electricity and introducing standard operating procedures.
