Budget: € 6.5 million

Since 2006, Vitens Evides International has been providing support in the cities of Tete, Moatize, Chimoio, Manica and Gondola, in central Mozambique. The goal is to set up independent, sustainable functioning water companies. The companies will provide their customers with a constant supply of safe water. To make this possible it is important to have affordable prices that cover costs and an efficient use of water.

The project is offering technical and management assistance for the drinking water infrastructure. The inhabitants of the cities should be able to always get safe water en rely on the continuity of the water supply. This means that, as well as the management, the infrastructure also has to improve. Vitens Evides International has assisted the Mozambican National Urban Water Investment and Asset Holding Fund (FIPAG) in preparing tender documents for the Emergency Investment Programme and is supervising the construction work. We are also helping to draw up a medium and long-term capital expenditure plan and develop a practical investment project.

Project: Water Operator Partnership between FIPAG (National Asset Holding and Investment Fund) and Vitens Evides International aimed at improving the supply of water in the cities of Chokwé, Xai-Xai, Inhambane and Maxixe
Duration: 2005 – 2008 (1st phase) / 2008 – 2012 (2nd phase)
Population: 500,000 people
Budget: € 5.3 million

Vitens Evides International started working with the Mozambican National Urban Water Investment and Asset Holding Fund (FIPAG) on improving the daily operation of the water companies for the towns of Chókwé, Inhambane, Maxixe and Xai-Xai in Southern Mozambique in 2004. FIPAG is the national and independent government institution responsible for improving the urban drinking water supply in Mozambique.

The project – in which also the Netherlands’ Ministry of Development Coorperations is involved – supports the water companies on almost all fronts. This includes assistance with the development of business plans and the implementation of management information, technical and financial administration systems. For instance we want to reduce the water losses that are unaccounted for from 60% to 30%. Vitens Evides International also offers support for the development of standard procedures for processes in the fields of production, distribution and sales.
